Common questions

What exactly does SPEIDER do?+
SPEIDER reads the public record for the clients you care about: business news, EDGAR, federal court opinions, USPTO patents and PTAB challenges, the Federal Register, SEC, FTC and DOJ press releases, product recalls, workplace safety notices, securities class-action alerts, and the legal trade press. Then it writes a briefing that says: (1) what's relevant to your client, (2) why it matters, and (3) what's worth considering.Five minutes to create a client lens, one click for every briefing after that.
Are the considerations something I can give to a client?+
They're suggestions, drafted as starting points for a lawyer. Treat them like notes from a sharp associate, not finished work product. Read them, edit them, and apply your own judgment before sending anything to a client.
How accurate are the AI-generated summaries?+
Generally solid, but AI makes mistakes. SPEIDER uses Anthropic to write the summaries, and every article links back to the original source. AI can misread, miss context, or occasionally mischaracterize a filing. Check the source before you rely on it, especially when advising a client.
How current is the news in a pull?+
We refresh sources daily, and business news twice a day. That fits how most legal developments unfold (days, not minutes). Each pull reaches back 90 days, so material from last month still surfaces if it hasn't been resolved. If you're tracking a fast-moving same-day event minute by minute, a news terminal will get there before us.
What sources does SPEIDER pull from?+
SEC EDGAR filings, press releases from the SEC, FTC, and DOJ, federal court opinions from GovInfo, Supreme Court and state court opinions from CourtListener, the Federal Register, USPTO patent filings and PTAB challenges, CPSC product recalls, OSHA workplace-safety notices, the legal trade press (the National Law Review, the D&O Diary and Inside Class Actions), class-action filings that name a defendant, and a broad news feed that pulls in Reuters, Bloomberg, AP, and the major business press. Everything's matched against your client profile; if it doesn't apply, it doesn't show up.
Do you flag securities-litigation exposure?+
It's in development. The plan is a deterministic read on each public-company client, built from plaintiff-firm investigations, adverse filings such as going-concern warnings and restatements, and a real-time stock-drop layer, openable so you can see the filing or notice behind it. Today your briefings carry those underlying filings and notices directly.
Can briefings be emailed to me instead?+
Not yet. Today you click Generate Pull for the client you want, and the briefing renders in the dashboard. Email delivery is something we're building, so a briefing can arrive without you logging in. We're not putting a date on it until it works.
What aren't you watching?+
Today: state court dockets, most international regulatory bodies, paywalled trade press, and PACER (we carry the court opinions themselves, from GovInfo and CourtListener, but not the underlying PACER docket of filings, motions, and briefs). Coverage expands over time, but if your client's biggest exposure is one of those, SPEIDER is one input, not the whole picture.
What is Scout, and what won't he do?+
Scout is the AI assistant built into the platform. He shows up when you're filling out a profile, reading a briefing, or trying to make sense of a filing. Ask him about what you're looking at and he answers directly. Scout stays on the product: he doesn't give legal advice, take political or social stances, or weigh in on whether a development is good or bad for a client. If you ask him a legal question, use your own judgment on the answer. AI isn't perfect, so verify anything you'd rely on. Like the rest of the product, Scout's output is informational only.
Does SPEIDER work for all practice areas?+
It's built for lawyers who advise businesses: M&A, corporate, employment, IP, regulatory, litigation. Each client carries its own lens (M&A lens, IP lens, regulatory lens) so the framing adjusts per matter, not per lawyer. It's not the right tool for criminal defense, family law, or practices where clients are primarily individuals.
Can I split a client into different focus areas?+
Yes. Each client starts with one lens (the signal map each pull runs on) built from the intake form, but you can add more from the client's Lens page. Click "+ New lens," give it a name like "IP only" or "M&A and antitrust," and SPEIDER regenerates from the same profile but narrows the lens to that focus. On the dashboard you pick which lens to run for a given pull. Each briefing focuses on the lens you picked; switch lenses to pull a different one. Useful when you do more than one kind of work for the same client and don't want everything blended into one pull.
How does the trial work?+
14 days of full access. You enter a credit card at signup, but you're not charged until day 15. Cancel anytime during the trial and you won't be billed.
What happens after the trial ends?+
When the trial ends, your subscription starts automatically at $29/month and you keep using SPEIDER, unless you've already cancelled.
Can I cancel my subscription?+
Yes, whenever. Cancel from account settings. You keep access through the end of the period you paid for. We don't prorate refunds, but we won't charge you again once you've cancelled. After that your account stays open, read-only, so your clients and past briefings are still there to read or export.
Is my client information secure?+
Your data is walled off at the database level, so no other account can see it. We don't store raw documents (we extract structured data and delete the file), and we don't let the AI train on what you put in. The full security writeup is on the Security page.
What happens when I upload a document?+
We pull out what's useful (counterparty names, agreement types, industry, jurisdictions, suggested keywords). The original is never written to our database or to disk. It lives in memory for the seconds it takes to parse, then it's gone. We keep the extracted notes, not the document itself. You can view, edit, or delete those notes anytime from the client profile. Don't upload anything you don't want extracted.
Is SPEIDER providing legal advice?+
No. SPEIDER is a research and monitoring tool, not a law firm. Nothing in the platform creates an attorney-client relationship. Every pull, summary, and consideration is informational only. You're the lawyer; the judgment call is always yours. Verify anything important before you act on it or hand it to a client.
Should I rely on a pull without checking the underlying sources?+
No. Every article in a pull links back to the original filing, court record, or news piece. Click through and read the source before you rely on it for anything client-facing. Treat the pull as a triage layer, not a substitute for reading the document.
Does SPEIDER raise unauthorized practice of law concerns?+
What counts as practicing law varies by state, so we can't give you a conclusion for your jurisdiction, and this answer isn't one. Here's what the product does: SPEIDER is a monitoring tool for lawyers. It gathers public information and drafts briefings for you to read. It doesn't give legal advice, and it doesn't deal with your clients. You review everything it produces and decide what, if anything, reaches a client. The AI Disclosure sets out where AI is used and what it doesn't do.
Are you liable if I rely on something SPEIDER got wrong?+
Our liability is limited, not ruled out. SPEIDER is provided as is, without warranties of accuracy or completeness, and the Terms cap what we can owe you and exclude indirect losses. It's a research tool: the decision to act on anything you read here is yours. The details are in the limitation of liability section of the Terms.
